Merger business case will not be submitted to the Home Office

Following a meeting of the Police and Crime Panel PCC Alison Hernandez has decided that she will not support the proposed merger of Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police.

After a lengthy debate on Friday (5 October) members of the Police and Crime Panel voted 12:4 to support the PCC’s position that she was minded to stop the merger.

The final case will not be submitted to the Home Office.

Speaking after the meeting Alison said she appreciated being able to bring the case to the panel for an additional layer of scrutiny and transparency.

“I needed to be sure we were making the right decision for our communities and to have the support of the panel tells me that merging the two police forces is not in the best interests of the people of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly,” she said.

“We’re back to business as usual in Devon and Cornwall and I look forward to doing more work with our partners in local authorities, police forces and other emergency services.”
