‘Black Friday’ often sees a rise in violence as revellers indulge in alcohol.
This year it comes the day after a man was convicted of killing his friend in a ‘one-punch’ assault following a row over a bottle of wine.
A jury at Exeter Crown Court found Guy Pottle, 32, of the manslaughter of Antony Moore, 40. Mr Moore died after hitting his head following the fracas outside Tesco Metro in the city in June.
Alison Hernandez is among campaigners supporters of the One Punch Can Kill campaign which aims to raise awareness of the dangers of violence. It urges people to ‘be the hero and walk away’.
“This needless death is proof that violence, whether it’s intended to cause serious harm or not, can have tragic consequences,” Alison said.
“As people prepare to leave work for the Christmas break we know that amid the revelry there is a heightened chance of people being assaulted, injured and even killed.
“Before they head out to pubs and clubs I’d urge people to reflect on this case, look out for one another and walk away from conflict. Pottle did not mean to kill his victim, but he did that with a single punch.
“My thoughts are with Mr Moore’s family, and I hope they take some solace from the fact that this man, who has a history of violence, is now facing a lengthy custodial sentence.”
