Open and Transparent Quality Mark 2016/17 and 2017/18

Independent custody visitor

The Officer of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) is currently welcoming applications for independent custody visitors.

The OPCC manages a team of dedicated volunteers who undertake vital duties for its Independent Custody Visiting (ICV) scheme.

Representatives from the community are recruited and appointed across Devon and Cornwall to visit the six police custody centres in Barnstaple, Camborne, Exeter, Newquay, Plymouth and Torquay.

ICVs generally visit their closest two stations.

Unannounced visits are made by pairs of visitors at varying times of the day and night to check on the treatment of detainees, the conditions in which they are being held and ensure that their rights and entitlements are being observed.

After every visit, the visitors complete a written report form about their findings, which is then passed onto the ICV Scheme Co-ordinator at the OPCC.

Independent custody visitors (ICVs) come from a variety of backgrounds and sections of the community.

They must be over 18 years old and, as they must be independent, serving police officers and others who work in the policing family (OPCC staff, Special Constables, lay justices or members of the Police and Crime Panel) cannot undertake this role.

They must live or work in the area of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and have been resident in the UK for the past three years prior to application.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 30 June 2019.

Informal Interviews will take place on July 18, 19 and 20 in Exeter.

Please contact the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner on 01392 225555, 8:30am – 5pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays or email if you have any queries about this role.

Applications will not be accepted by CV.
