Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez has said her thoughts are with the families and friends of the woman and young girl who died after a crash in Plymouth on Sunday morning.

A 74-year-old woman is being held in custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and of driving while unfit through drink or drug after the two pedestrians were hit by a car in the St Budeaux area of the city. They were taken two hospital and later died from their injuries.

Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, is also chair of the Vision Zero South West road safety partnership.

Commissioner Hernandez said: “My thoughts are with the families and friends of the woman and young girl who died following a collision in Plymouth yesterday. I cannot imagine the pain they are currently going through and pass on my sincere condolences.

“Our Vision Zero South West partners work tirelessly to prevent collisions across Devon and Cornwall – and, sadly, tragic incidents like this remind us just how important this work is.
